My Experiences of Indonesia

Last summer I headed to Bali for a two week trip around Indonesia. It’s hard not to love the adventure and magic mixed with the tradition and calming landscapes.

The first stop was Ubud which has jungle-like surroundings in the centre of Bali. There is so much on offer there from quad biking around rice terraces, cultural temples and fire dances, massages, great food and amazing scenery.

A few must see places include:

  • Arts and Craft Ubud Market

  • Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

  • Tirta Empul Temple

  • Kanto Lampo Waterfall

  • Quad Biking is a perfect way to absorb the surroundings too!

The Mount Batur sunrise trekking tour is a highly anticipated main event. With a start time of 2am it really is an adventure like no other; trekking up an active volcano in the pitch black of night. The sunrise is very rewarding and definitely worth the early start though.

I would stick clear of Tegallanang rice fields as they are not the idyllic insta opportunity that you see in photos. There are lots of more beautiful, tranquil rice terraces with no one around. Also, try some Luwak coffee, Bintang beer and a traditional Balinese massage.

Indonesia is made up of so many islands. It is definitely worth exploring outside of Bali too. Padar Island is one of my favourite spots I have ever visited and there are many more islands with clear blue waters, great snorkelling opportunities and unique wildlife. A few day boat trip from Flores is an ideal way to make the most of what’s on offer.

The Gili’s, although a bit touristy, have a relaxing, remote, holiday-feeling vibe and also an amazing spot to swim with turtles. On a days snorkel I saw about 40! There are no vehicles on the island and its tiny so almost feels like a step back in time.

Around 2 weeks should be just about enough time to see the main events and to explore off the beaten track too with some of the more remote islands. Indonesia is a very spiritual and relaxing place with great vibes and 100% worth a visit!
